Skyggen
(2020)
vocalizing solo flute
6 min
Program Note:
Skyggen takes its name from a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale in which a shadow convinces a man that he is real and that the man is merely his shadow. This unsettling story inspired me to explore the relationship between voice and instrument—how a voice can act as a “shadow” to the instrument, and when the performer is perceived as the “real man” behind the shadow.
Text:
"He fancies himself a real man, and I his shadow!"
Skyggen was commissioned by Sarah Brady.
